Music - Spring Term

Welcome to Music!

(Please scroll to bottom of page for Music videos)

We use an exciting website called Charanga Musical School in all our music lessons. This helps to teach musical knowledge and skills through learning to sing, play instruments, improvise and compose to many different pieces of music from different genres throughout history, including rock and pop! We perform in class at the end of every lesson. Please scroll down to see Key Stage 2 videos.

In Key Stage 1 children learn about key musical concepts through singing and playing percussion instruments including djembe drums and glockenspiels.

All Key Stage 2 children learn how to play the recorder in Year 3. From there they continue to develop their musical knowledge through singing and playing a variety of instruments, including glockenspiels, keyboards, various percussion instruments and steel pans.

Children in Key Stage 2 also have the opportunity to access Charanga Music World at home to support and enhance their musical learning.

Extra-Curricular Music

Key Stage 2 children have the opportunity to sing in a choir on a Tuesday after school and in Year 6 there is an orchestra club on a Thursday lunchtime.

From Year 4, children have the opportunity to have guitar lessons in school. These are provided by a private music teacher and are paid for by parents.

In Key Stage 2 we have drum kit lessons, again paid for by parents, provided by the East Riding Schools' Music Service.

Choir children compete at Hornsea Music Festival in July and there are many more opportunities for children in music clubs to perform throughout the year, including singing for pensioners, a Christmas concert, our Year 6 Leavers Show and Hornsea Musical Extravaganza, a community music event held in June.

Children have the opportunity throughout the year to experience live music with visiting groups and concerts from the Schools' Music Service.

Pupil Voice

A few quotes from our Key Stage 2 children:

"My favourite activity in Music is improvising because I like creating my own rhythms." - Lucy-Ann

"I enjoy playing the recorder because of all the different notes I can make." - Maddison

"I enjoy playing different instruments because I learn how to play them in different ways and I learn new rhythms and patterns. I have learnt that it is not easy to play instruments but I need to keep trying." - Millie

"My favourite activity is drumming because I like to work out which patterns I can make. I have learnt that in Music you need to know maths a lot!" - Amelia

"I have learnt how to play the guitar. I enjoy it because my grandad and dad play the guitar and my favourite guitar player is Stevie Ray Vaughan. That has inspired my joy in playing the guitar." - Thomas

Performances

The children in Key Stage 2 perform in class at the end of every lesson. This is recorded on video and watched back so that the children can see and hear their progress. There are also sometimes opportunities for them to perform to other children in assemblies. On the termly links are some videos of some of the children's performances, in class and assembly.

6NF Jazz Compositions

These Year 6 children worked very hard composing their own repeating two bar melodies using 5 different pitched notes, including Bb, with crotchets, minims, dotted minims and rests. They then had to write their music correctly on the stave and perform it in time with the jazz music. It was a real challenge but they did brilliantly!

The children in this Year 4 class have been working on progressing their recorder skills. Some children have mastered how to play the notes D,E and F on the recorder, which use both hands and are extremely low and tricky to control playing without squeaking! They did a great job of playing this piece along with the others on glockenspiels and keyboards.
