Addition and subtraction
In Year 2 we look at adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers and 1 digit numbers and 2 digit and 2 digit numbers up to 100.
Some possible addition questions that they could answer would be:
24 + 5 =
29 + 5 =
60 + 5 =
60 + 20 =
53 + 24 =
47 + 16 =
The method we encourage the children to use for addition is column addition.
Some possible subtraction questions that they could answer would be:
56 - 5 =
40 - 10 =
42 - 5 =
63 - 11 =
57 - 19 =
The method we encourage the children to use for subtraction in Year 2 is number line subtraction, starting with the biggest number, then taking away the ones then the tens.
